The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), together with ESCWA, the League of Arab States, and the World Food Programme (WFP), recently organized a major regional meeting in Cairo focused on transforming food systems across the Arab region. The discussions centered on improving food-system resilience, addressing water scarcity, strengthening sustainable agriculture, and enhancing regional cooperation to improve long-term food security.

Participants highlighted the growing impact of climate change, geopolitical instability, and global supply-chain disruptions on agricultural production and food availability in the Near East and North Africa region. Experts stressed the importance of climate-resilient farming systems, water-efficient crops, and stronger regional coordination to reduce dependence on vulnerable global supply routes.

The meeting also emphasized the need for sustainable agricultural investments, improved resource management, and stronger support for local food production systems. Policymakers and international organizations agreed that building resilient agrifood systems will be critical for protecting vulnerable populations and improving regional food security amid increasing environmental and economic pressures.
