A progressive farmer from Karnataka was recently recognized at the ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), Hyderabad, for his outstanding contribution to finger millet cultivation and the successful adoption of modern agricultural practices. The recognition highlighted the importance of scientific farming methods in improving productivity, sustainability, and rural livelihoods.
By adopting improved finger millet varieties along with advanced cultivation techniques, the farmer significantly enhanced crop yield and farm profitability. Support from agricultural experts and the use of better nutrient management practices, scientific transplanting methods, and climate-resilient farming approaches played a major role in this achievement.
The initiative also helped strengthen market access through farmer-focused organizations, allowing better pricing opportunities and improved economic returns. In addition to increasing farm income, millet cultivation supported livestock feeding requirements and contributed to a more sustainable integrated farming system.
During the event, agricultural leaders emphasized the growing role of millets in ensuring nutritional security, climate-resilient agriculture, and environmentally sustainable farming. The success story demonstrates how technological innovation, institutional support, and farmer participation can collectively promote sustainable agricultural development and improve the socio-economic conditions of farming communities.
