Odisha has partnered with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to strengthen climate-smart rice farming and improve agricultural sustainability across the state. The collaboration aims to promote modern farming technologies, scientific crop management, and sustainable agricultural practices that can help farmers adapt to climate change while increasing productivity and resource efficiency.
The initiative focuses on areas such as precision agriculture, improved seed systems, rice-fallow management, and the use of digital and geospatial technologies in farming. Researchers and policymakers are working together to support farmers facing challenges such as erratic rainfall, drought conditions, declining soil fertility, and changing weather patterns. The programme also encourages regenerative farming practices that can improve soil health and reduce environmental stress.
In addition to rice cultivation, the partnership seeks to strengthen millet and value-added food systems by supporting processing, entrepreneurship, and market development. Self-help groups and farmer organisations are expected to benefit from opportunities linked to nutritious rice varieties and millet-based products. Experts believe that integrating climate-smart agriculture with sustainable food systems can improve farmer incomes, enhance nutrition security, and build stronger rural livelihoods in Odisha.
