Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi has emphasised the need to strengthen women’s health, improve education, and encourage millet cultivation during his visit to Arunachal Pradesh’s Namsai district under the Aspirational District Programme. He highlighted the importance of better healthcare access for women, particularly regular screening and awareness related to cervical and breast cancer. The minister also stressed the need for quality teacher training and stronger educational support to improve learning outcomes in rural areas.
In addition to healthcare and education, millet farming was identified as an important tool for sustainable agricultural development. Millets are gaining recognition for their high nutritional value and climate resilience, as they require less water and fewer agricultural inputs compared to many conventional crops. Promoting millet cultivation can help improve food security, support environmentally sustainable farming, and provide better livelihood opportunities for local farmers.
The discussions reflected a broader vision of inclusive rural development that combines health, education, and sustainable agriculture. Encouraging women’s participation in farming, nutrition awareness, and millet-based enterprises can strengthen rural economies while preserving traditional agricultural practices. Experts believe that integrating these sectors can create long-term social and economic benefits for communities across the Northeast.
