Government Targets International Markets with Millet Export Strategy

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has introduced a new Millet Export Promotion Plan aimed at increasing India’s presence in the global millet trade. The initiative seeks to create better market opportunities for farmers while promoting millets as nutritious and sustainable grains in international markets.

The plan focuses on improving the entire millet value chain, including processing, packaging, quality standards, and export infrastructure. Support will also be provided to Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), exporters, and millet-based enterprises to help them access global markets more effectively. Key export destinations identified under the programme include regions in Europe, West Asia, and other countries showing rising demand for healthy and climate-resilient foods.

Officials believe the initiative will strengthen millet exports while encouraging value-added millet products and global brand recognition for Indian millets. The programme also builds on the growing international interest generated after the International Year of Millets campaign, positioning millets as an important crop for nutrition security, sustainable agriculture, and future food systems.
