ICAR-IIMR Encourages Millet Entrepreneurship and Scientific Farming

The ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research (ICAR-IIMR), Hyderabad, organized a specialized training programme for Scheduled Caste (SC) farmers to promote sustainable farming practices, balanced fertilizer usage, and millet-based livelihood opportunities. The initiative aimed to strengthen farmers’ knowledge of scientific agriculture while encouraging the adoption of climate-resilient millet cultivation systems.

During the programme, agricultural experts guided participants on the importance of proper nutrient management, efficient fertilizer application, and soil health improvement to achieve better crop productivity and reduce unnecessary cultivation costs. The sessions also focused on sustainable farming approaches that support long-term agricultural productivity and environmental conservation.

Farmers were additionally introduced to millet processing and value-addition techniques through practical demonstrations and interactive sessions. Participants received hands-on exposure to the preparation of millet-based food products, including bakery items and mechanized jowar roti production. The programme also encouraged entrepreneurship by highlighting opportunities in small-scale millet processing and local food enterprises.

The initiative is expected to create new income-generation avenues for farming communities, particularly for rural women and farmer producer groups. By linking millet cultivation with processing and market-oriented activities, the programme supports both nutritional security and economic empowerment while promoting the wider adoption of millets as sustainable crops.
