Lahari Bai Preserves Traditional Millet Seeds for Future Generations

Lahari Bai, a tribal farmer from Madhya Pradesh, has emerged as an inspiring figure in India’s millet revival movement through her dedication to preserving traditional millet seeds and promoting sustainable farming. Known as the “Millets Queen,” she has spent years collecting and conserving indigenous millet varieties that were gradually disappearing from local agriculture.

Concerned about the loss of traditional crops, Lahari Bai travelled across nearby villages to gather native millet seeds and protect them for future generations. Over time, she succeeded in conserving a large number of rare millet varieties and established a community seed bank to support farmers interested in reviving traditional cultivation practices. Her efforts have encouraged many rural communities to return to climate-resilient and nutritious millet farming.

Despite facing challenges and limited resources, she continued her mission with determination and commitment. Her work has gained recognition for supporting biodiversity conservation, nutrition security, and sustainable agriculture. Actor R. Madhavan recently praised her achievements, bringing wider attention to her contribution toward protecting India’s traditional food heritage.

Today, Lahari Bai continues to guide farmers on seed conservation and millet cultivation while inspiring communities across the country. Her journey highlights the important role grassroots farmers can play in building resilient agricultural systems and preserving indigenous knowledge for future generations.
