Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome drew attention to India’s expanding role in global agriculture and food diplomacy. During the visit, India showcased a range of traditional grains and millet-based products, reflecting the country’s agricultural diversity and growing ambitions in international food trade.
The presentation included premium rice varieties and value-added millet products that highlighted India’s rich farming heritage and regional food traditions. By featuring indigenous grains alongside globally recognised products such as basmati rice, India reinforced its commitment to promoting nutritious, sustainable, and climate-resilient crops on international platforms.
Millets formed an important part of the showcase, underlining India’s efforts to revive traditional grains that are both environmentally sustainable and nutritionally beneficial. These crops require less water, adapt well to difficult climatic conditions, and are increasingly viewed as important for strengthening food security and sustainable agriculture worldwide.
The visit also reflected India’s broader strategy of using agricultural cooperation and food exports to strengthen international partnerships. With rising global concerns over climate change, food shortages, and supply-chain disruptions, India is positioning itself as a key contributor to resilient and sustainable food systems.
In addition to promoting traditional crops, the event highlighted opportunities for expanding India’s agri-export sector through food processing, branding, and value addition. Experts believe that growing international interest in healthy and climate-smart foods could create new markets for Indian millet products and heritage grains in the years ahead.
