Ranveer Brar Calls for Greater Recognition of Indian Millets and Native Foods

Chef Ranveer Brar has spoken about the growing use of the term “superfood,” saying that many foods receive the label mainly because of marketing trends rather than scientific classification. He explained that traditional Indian foods have provided balanced nutrition for generations, long before modern branding popularised certain ingredients as health foods.

Brar pointed to Indian staples such as millets, makhana, jamun, and other indigenous ingredients as examples of naturally nutritious foods that have always been part of local diets. According to him, Indian culinary traditions focused on seasonal eating, regional ingredients, and overall wellness rather than commercial food trends. He noted that foods like ragi and other millets were valued for their nutritional strength and health benefits long before they became globally popular.

He also observed that the international popularity of grains like quinoa helped renew interest in India’s own traditional grains and food heritage. Brar emphasized that ancient Indian food knowledge, including Ayurvedic practices, offers valuable insights into healthy eating and sustainable nutrition that remain relevant even today.
