Sudan’s Farming Sector Caught Between War and Economic Strain

Sudan’s farmers, already struggling in the aftermath of a three-year civil war and a deepening hunger crisis, are now confronting a new wave of hardship linked to rising global conflict pressures. Disruptions to international supply chains particularly through key Middle Eastern shipping routes have sharply increased the cost of essential farming inputs such as fuel and fertilizer.

With input prices surging and support systems strained, many farmers are being forced to scale back production or leave fields unplanted ahead of the upcoming agricultural season. This comes at a critical time for Sudan, where millions of people are already facing acute food insecurity and depend heavily on domestic crop production.

Farmers report that the rising costs are making cultivation increasingly unviable, threatening staple crops and worsening an already fragile food system. Experts warn that reduced planting could trigger a dangerous chain reaction, further tightening food supplies and intensifying hunger across the country.
