Bengaluru’s Agriculture Minister, N Cheluvaraya Swamy, joined a passionate group of volunteers in the city’s recent “Millet Run,” a vibrant event focused on promoting the numerous benefits of millets. This initiative was designed not only to raise awareness about the rich nutritional profile of millets but also to encourage their widespread consumption as part of a healthy, sustainable diet.
The event highlighted millets' numerous health benefits, showcasing their richness in fiber, proteins, and vital minerals. But the significance of the day extended beyond health, as the event also spotlighted the pivotal role millets play in India’s agricultural practices. These resilient grains are well-suited to diverse climatic conditions and require far fewer resources, such as water and fertilizers, making them a sustainable and low-cost crop for farmers.
Moreover, the "Millet Run" emphasized millets' potential in addressing broader food security challenges. Due to their adaptability and minimal environmental footprint, millets are considered a promising solution to many of the issues posed by traditional cereal crops, such as rice and wheat, particularly in the face of climate change.
This event is part of ongoing efforts across India to revive millet cultivation and reintroduce these ancient grains into the mainstream food system. By encouraging both farmers and consumers to embrace millets, the initiative aims to make them a staple food once again, while simultaneously promoting agricultural sustainability and enhancing India’s overall food security.
