Westlife Foodworld, through its subsidiary Hardcastle Restaurants Pvt Ltd (HRPL), operates quick-service restaurants. HRPL holds a franchise agreement with McDonald’s Corporation USA to manage McDonald’s outlets in West and South India. To celebrate National Nutrition Week, the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru has partnered with McDonald's to launch a new multi-millet bun. This product aims to make food healthier and more nutritious.
This collaboration is a unique first, combining CFTRI's scientific expertise with the global reach of McDonald's. The new buns are made from five types of nutritious millet: Bajra, Ragi, Jowar, Proso, and Kodo. These millets are sourced from local farms across various regions in India, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
Thanks to the hard work of CFTRI scientists, the bun contains 22 percent millet, using a blend of five different millets. While most multigrain buns have about 20 percent grains, this bun has 22 percent millet, maintaining great taste and texture while offering the health benefits of Millet.
In an interview with DH, CFTRI Director Sridevi Annapurna Singh explained that the multi-millet bun merges good nutrition with great taste and innovation. She highlighted that millet, once a staple superfood in India, is making a comeback due to its impressive health benefits. The millets in the bun come from over 5,000 farmers across India, and if the product gains popularity, it could significantly benefit and support these farmers.
