Millet Production in India: Key States and Their Contributions in 2025

India remains the world’s largest producer of millets, contributing nearly 38.4% of the global output in 2025. Leading the way is Rajasthan, which accounts for about 27% of India’s millet production, mainly growing pearl millet (bajra) and sorghum (jowar). The state’s dry climate and government support have made it a top millet producer. Karnataka follows with around 18% of the country’s production, known especially for its finger millet (ragi) cultivation, a staple food in the region. Maharashtra contributes approximately 14%, cultivating various millets such as sorghum and finger millet, benefiting from its diverse climate zones.

Other key states include Uttar Pradesh, which produces about 12% of India’s millets, focusing largely on bajra and sorghum, and Gujarat, contributing roughly 7%, mainly growing pearl millet and sorghum in semi-arid areas. Together, these states play a crucial role in strengthening India’s millet production, promoting food security and sustainable farming. Government programs like the National Millet Mission continue to support and encourage millet cultivation across the country.
