Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Dr. Rakesh Minhas, on Wednesday inaugurated a Millet Restaurant in Pathwal, marking a significant step towards promoting holistic agriculture development and healthy eating habits in the district.
Run by a local Women's Self-Help Group, the Krishna Millet restaurant offers a diverse menu of millet-based dishes, catering to all age groups. The initiative aligns with the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) 2024-25, which aims to encourage the consumption of nutrient-rich millets like Ragi and Jowar. It also supports the United Nations' declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millet.
Dr. Minhas commended the SHG members for their entrepreneurial spirit and urged the public to support the promotion of millets. He highlighted the numerous health benefits of millets, including their ability to improve digestion, manage diabetes, and boost immunity.
The restaurant's convenient operating hours, from 7:00 AM to 9:30 PM, allow patrons to enjoy a nutritious breakfast, lunch, or dinner. By patronizing this establishment, individuals can contribute to women's empowerment and sustainable agriculture.
Dr. Minhas emphasized the environmental benefits of millet cultivation, noting that these crops require less water and are well-suited for the region's arid climate. He encouraged farmers to take advantage of government subsidies and incentives offered under the HADP to promote millet cultivation and processing.
Kathua's emergence as a leading millet-producing district underscores the region's potential in sustainable agriculture. The inauguration of the Millet Restaurant signifies the district administration's commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, empowering women, and fostering a sustainable future.
