The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has launched its ambitious five-year Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI), covering the period from FY 2021–22 to FY 2026–27. This flagship initiative is designed to strengthen India’s food processing ecosystem by encouraging large-scale investment, boosting production capacities, and enhancing global competitiveness. A major highlight of the scheme is its strong emphasis on millet-based products, reflecting the government’s broader vision of promoting nutritious, climate-resilient crops and supporting sustainable food systems across the country.
Under the PLISFPI framework, a dedicated outlay of ₹800 crore has been earmarked specifically for millet-based products, aligning with the objectives of the International Year of Millets (IYOM). This focused investment aims to increase the use of millets in value-added food products while incentivising manufacturers to expand production and sales in both domestic and international markets. By supporting the development of ready-to-eat, ready-to-cook, and other innovative millet-based offerings, the scheme seeks to create new market opportunities for farmers, processors, and exporters alike.
The Millet-Based Products component of the scheme has already shown encouraging progress. To date, 29 applicants have been approved under the PLISMBP category, leading to the establishment of millet processing units across 45 locations nationwide. These units are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the millet value chain, reducing post-harvest losses, and improving processing infrastructure in key agricultural regions. Notably, one of the approved processing units is located in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, highlighting the scheme’s reach into emerging and tribal districts with strong agricultural potential.
In parallel with MoFPI’s efforts, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has introduced a new initiative titled “BHARATI,” which stands for Bharat’s Hub for Agritech, Resilience, Advancement, and Incubation for Export Enablement. This initiative focuses on supporting agri-food and agri-tech startups by providing incubation, mentorship, and export-oriented guidance. BHARATI aims to accelerate innovation in the agricultural and food processing sectors while enabling startups to access global markets and enhance India’s agri-export footprint.
Together, the PLISFPI and BHARATI initiatives reflect a coordinated approach to transforming India’s food processing industry. By combining financial incentives, infrastructure development, startup support, and export facilitation, these programmes are expected to boost value addition, generate employment, and position India as a global hub for millet-based and processed food products
