New Initiative Aims to Boost Rice and Millet Production in The Gambia

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Government of China have started a new project in The Gambia to improve rice and millet farming. The project aims to strengthen the country’s food system, increase crop production, and support farmers with better agricultural practices.

Rice and millet are important staple foods for people in The Gambia. However, the country produces only a small portion of the rice it consumes and depends heavily on imports. Millet farming also faces several challenges, including limited resources, poor market access, and weak post-harvest systems.

To address these issues, the project will introduce improved farming technologies, better seed varieties, and efficient irrigation methods. It will also focus on improving processing and storage systems for both rice and millet. Experts from China will work with local farmers and agricultural officers to provide training on modern farming techniques, crop breeding, water management, and farm mechanization.

The programme is expected to benefit thousands of farmers and agricultural workers in the country. By improving farming skills and strengthening the rice and millet value chains, the project aims to increase local food production and reduce The Gambia’s dependence on imported rice.
