A two-day training programme on organic millet farming was organised in Arunachal Pradesh to help farmers adopt sustainable agricultural practices.
The programme was conducted by the ICAR Arunachal Pradesh Centre in Basar, covering villages in Shi-Yomi district under a Tribal Sub-Plan initiative. Around 40 farmers, including many women, participated in the sessions.
Experts guided the participants on the benefits of cultivating millets organically, focusing on crops like finger millet. They explained suitable farming methods, selection of varieties, and how millet cultivation can improve both nutrition and environmental health.
The training also highlighted the importance of natural farming techniques. Farmers were encouraged to follow integrated farming practices that combine crop cultivation with livestock and proper use of farm waste to improve soil fertility.
Interactive sessions allowed farmers to ask questions and gain practical knowledge directly from scientists. To further support them, useful farming materials such as improved millet seeds, shade nets, and small equipment were distributed.
Overall, the programme aimed to build farmers’ skills, promote organic millet cultivation, and improve livelihoods in tribal areas while supporting eco-friendly farming practices.
