Ukraine’s Millet Sector Begins Slow Recovery

Ukraine is expected to increase its millet cultivation area by about 20% in 2026, reaching nearly 40,000 hectares. This shows a gradual recovery in millet farming after a significant decline in recent years.

However, the total area under millet is still lower compared to earlier levels. In the past, millet was grown on a much larger scale, but production has reduced due to various ongoing challenges.

One major issue affecting the sector is limited supply. Processing units have been facing operational difficulties, including power shortages, which have disrupted smooth functioning.

Millet production has also declined in the recent season, mainly due to reduced cultivation and other constraints faced by farmers.

Weather conditions have further delayed sowing activities. Cold temperatures, frozen soil, and snow-covered fields have slowed down early fieldwork. Despite this, the overall cultivation area is expected to remain stable.

On a positive note, land clearance activities are helping to bring more farmland back into use, which could support increased millet production in the future, while there are signs of recovery, Ukraine’s millet sector is still in the process of overcoming recent challenges and rebuilding its production capacity.
