Andhra Pradesh is commonly known for its abundant rice cultivation. However, in the villages of Nallavoi in Vijayanagar district, 1200 women farmers are achieving significant benefits by cultivating millets. Over the past decade, they have been actively involved in millet farming under the leadership of CEO K. Saraswathi at the Arogya Millets Foundation.
The initiative faced challenges initially, as millet cultivation replaced conventional crops in the 2006-07 period. With the support of the Women's Development Society, which provided interest-free loans, these women farmers began cultivating millets on 200 acres of land. Recently, a new millet processing unit worth 40 million rupees was established in Rega village, Vijayanagar district, further boosting the morale of millet farmers.
Since the inception of millet farming in Vijayanagar district, significant improvements have been noted over the past two decades, as mentioned by Saraswathi. Women farmers here produce millets, millet powder, biscuits, bakery items, pasta, flakes, and noodles, not only catering to Andhra Pradesh but also to other states. This has enabled them to achieve good financial returns, according to Usha Rani, Chairperson of Arogya Millets Producer Company
