Taking a major step in advancing sustainable farming and millet innovation, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan laid the foundation stone for the Shri Ann Global Centre of Excellence on Millets in Hyderabad on July 3, 2025.
The initiative strengthens India's commitment to becoming a global hub for millet-based research, innovation, and enterprise development. During his address, Chouhan emphasized the critical role the Centre will play in building and enhancing India’s millet ecosystem. He noted that the Centre will serve as a driving force for value addition, technological innovation, and skill development throughout the millet sector.
The Centre supports the government’s broader mission to revive and promote millets—referred to as “Shri Ann”—for their rich nutritional value, adaptability to climate change, and farmer-friendly nature.Building on India’s leadership during the International Year of Millets in 2023, this Centre signifies a deepened dedication to strengthening millet-based food systems. Its core objectives include advanced research, incubation of innovative agri-startups, technology development, and international partnerships.
The aim is to foster innovation, strengthen millet value chains, and generate sustainable income avenues for farmers and agriculture-based entrepreneurs. This groundbreaking is not merely the start of construction—it symbolizes a broader movement toward food security, improved nutrition, rural development, and environmental stewardship through the revival of ancient grains.
