Congress MLA urges farmers to adopt organic, nutritious millet farming methods.

The article reports on a strong appeal by Congress MLA HD Thammaiah, urging farmers to adopt organic farming methods and cultivate nutritious millets to improve both agricultural sustainability and public health. Speaking at a district-level organic and millet fair in Chikkamagaluru, Thammaiah highlighted the pressing issue of chemical contamination in food due to overuse of pesticides and fertilizers. He emphasized that organic farming helps produce toxin-free food, ensuring better nutrition for consumers while safeguarding the environment from harmful chemical residues.

Thammaiah pointed out that millets are not only healthy but also resilient crops that can thrive in low-rainfall conditions, making them especially suitable for regions facing water scarcity and climate stress. He underscored how millets, being drought-resistant and highly nutritious, can play a pivotal role in preventing lifestyle illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. This makes a compelling case for farmers to diversify away from water-intensive crops and embrace more sustainable, climate-adapted varieties.

In addition to health benefits, the MLA noted that organically grown millets fetch better prices in the market. This economic incentive, coupled with government encouragement for millet cultivation, creates a supportive environment for farmers to transition toward more profitable and sustainable agricultural practices. By boosting organic millet production, farmers can potentially improve their income while contributing to broader food security goals.

Representatives from other political parties also spoke at the event, reinforcing the importance of returning to natural and traditional farming practices. BJP MLC CT Ravi stressed that farmers became dependent on chemical agricultural inputs over time, and that reviving natural farming is essential for self-reliance. He advocated for fairs like this one to equip farmers with knowledge and resources to embrace these methods effectively.

Meanwhile, JD(S) MLC SL Bhojegowda pointed to the declining interest in agriculture among younger generations, urging a renewed focus on showcasing farming as a profitable and dignified profession. He warned that neglecting agriculture could have far-reaching societal consequences and emphasized the need for support systems that make farming attractive and sustainable for future generations.

Overall, the article captures a growing conversation around sustainable agriculture in Karnataka, blending health, economic, and environmental arguments in favor of organic and millet farming. It highlights collaborative efforts between government bodies and agricultural stakeholders to promote practices that can enhance soil health, farmer resilience, and community well-being.
