The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Central government on a public interest petition requesting an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for food grains. The plea highlights concerns that existing MSP rates do not adequately cover the rising cost of cultivation, leaving many farmers under financial pressure.
The court has issued notices to the Centre and other concerned authorities, asking them to present their views on the matter. The petition also calls for a pricing mechanism that reflects actual production costs and ensures fair compensation for farmers across different regions.
At the same time, the bench noted that MSP determination involves multiple economic and policy considerations. It observed that such decisions typically fall within the government’s domain, as they require balancing market dynamics, fiscal factors, and regional variations.
The case brings attention to ongoing demands for a more transparent and farmer-friendly pricing system, aimed at improving income security and strengthening the agricultural sector.
