Alappuzha district’s first millet cafe has opened in Devikulangara grama panchayat. Agriculture Minister P. Prasad inaugurated the cafe.
At the event, the Minister spoke about the health benefits of millets, especially in preventing lifestyle diseases caused by unhealthy eating habits. “Even when rice was the most popular food in our State, people still grew small amounts of millet. In times of rice shortages, these grains were an important alternative. But after the Green Revolution made rice and wheat more widely available, millets became less common. As people started eating more rice, lifestyle diseases like diabetes also increased,” he explained.
He also pointed out that Kerala’s annual rice consumption had dropped from 40 lakh tonnes to 29 lakh tonnes. “This is mainly because of lifestyle diseases. But it is good to see that people in Kerala are now bringing millets back into their diet,” he added.
The millet cafe was started by Ishas Krishi Koottam. Muthukulam block panchayat president D. Ambujakshy led the event.
