New Delhi: Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott experienced the versatility of millets firsthand during his visit to the Millets Experience Centre (MEC) at Dilli Haat on Friday. Abbott, who is in India for the NXT Conclave 2025, was pleasantly surprised by the variety of millet-based dishes available.

"I never imagined millets could be used in so many ways," Abbott said. "After tasting them here, I can confidently recommend them."Abbott is attending the NXT Conclave 2025, which is being held at Bharat Mandapam from February 28 to March 1.

The Millets Experience Centre was established in April 2023 as part of India’s initiative to promote millets on a global scale. The centre was inaugurated by former Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and NAFED Managing Director Rajbir Singh. Its launch followed India's successful push for the United Nations to declare 2023 as the International Year of Millets, a move backed by 72 countries. This recognition positioned India as a leader in advocating millets as a sustainable, nutritious crop that benefits farmers, consumers, and the environment.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare highlighted that the MEC aims to raise awareness about the nutritional value of millets, commonly referred to as "Shree Anna." The centre not only introduces visitors to millet-based dishes like millet dosa and millet pasta but also provides a platform for local startups to showcase ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook millet products.

The health benefits of millets were also a topic of discussion in the latest episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Pariksha Pe Charcha on February 14. Noted macrobiotic nutritionist Shonali Sabherwal, who appeared on the program, emphasized the importance of homemade meals in reducing stress. "Home-cooked food is the best way to manage stress," Sabherwal explained. "Including millets and brown rice in your diet helps maintain balance, control cravings, and keeps you full for up to eight hours."

Through initiatives like the MEC, India continues to champion millets as a key ingredient in a healthier and more sustainable diet, encouraging wider adoption among consumers both domestically and globally.
