From Wheat to Wealth: The Millet Revolution in Motihari

In the heart of Bihar’s East Champaran district, farmers in Motihari are sowing the seeds of change—quite literally. Taking inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to embrace millets during the International Year of Millets 2023, these farmers are turning away from traditional crops like wheat and rice and reaping unexpected rewards.

With over 1,000 hectares now dedicated to millet cultivation, crops such as Sawa, Kodo, Kangni, Ragi, Madua, and Maize are transforming not just fields, but fortunes.

District Agricultural Officer Manish Kumar Singh shared that this shift is proving to be a game-changer. Farmer Nayak Singh, once frustrated by low wheat yields, now sees bumper harvests with maize. Another local grower, Raju Sahu, said millets have tripled his crop output—enough to fund his daughter’s wedding and build a new home.

But it’s more than just profit. Millets are hardy, sustainable, and nutritious—a win for farmers, consumers, and the planet. As more farmers join this millet movement, Motihari is fast becoming a model for smart, sustainable agriculture in India.

This isn’t just a crop change—it’s a quiet revolution in the fields of Bihar.
