India is stepping up efforts to promote millets by combining scientific innovation with skill development and training initiatives.

During a recent visit to the Central Food Technology Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru, Union Minister Jitendra Singh highlighted how millet-based food products developed using Indian technology are gaining recognition, including interest from international markets and food businesses.

CFTRI has set up a specialised Centre of Excellence focused on millets. The centre works on developing modern, value-added food products from traditional grains, making them more suitable for today’s consumers while preserving their nutritional benefits.

To further support this mission, a new residential training facility is being developed. This centre will provide hands-on training to farmers, entrepreneurs, self-help groups, and startups, helping them learn food processing techniques, product development, and business skills related to millets.

The institute is equipped with advanced processing technologies that can convert different types of millets into a range of products such as flour, flakes, semolina, and ready-to-eat foods. These technologies also help improve shelf life and maintain quality, making millet products more market-friendly.

The government is focusing on building a strong millet ecosystem by encouraging innovation, supporting startups, and improving market access. There is also an emphasis on connecting research institutions with real-world applications to ensure that farmers benefit directly.

Overall, these efforts aim to position millets as an important part of India’s food system, supporting better nutrition, sustainable agriculture, and increased income opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs.
