The Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Foundation (HKMCF) has taken a significant step towards strengthening nutritional security and promoting sustainable food systems by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR), Hyderabad. This collaboration focuses on promoting millet-based food initiatives through structured knowledge sharing, recipe development, training programmes and large-scale awareness campaigns. The partnership highlights the growing importance of millets in addressing contemporary challenges related to health, climate resilience and food security in India, particularly in Telangana and other southern states.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Sri Satya Gaura Chandra Dasa Prabhuji, President of the Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Foundation, and Dr C. Tara Satyavathi, Director of ICAR-IIMR. The agreement aims to integrate scientific research with community-based food service models, ensuring that millet-based foods reach a wider population. By combining ICAR-IIMR’s research expertise with HKMCF’s extensive food distribution network, the initiative seeks to mainstream nutritious millet products in daily diets and public food programmes.
Speaking on the occasion, Sri Satya Gaura Chandra Dasa Prabhuji emphasised that millets are deeply rooted in India’s traditional food culture and are essential for addressing present-day health and sustainability concerns. He noted that this collaboration would enable innovative ways to incorporate millets into HKMCF’s food programmes, benefiting society at large. The initiative reflects a broader vision of reviving traditional grains while aligning them with modern nutritional needs and large-scale community kitchens.
Dr C. Tara Satyavathi highlighted that the MoU would help connect millet-growing farmers directly with large, dedicated kitchens such as those run by HKMCF. This linkage ensures a steady supply of millets from farms to food programmes, supporting farmers’ livelihoods while promoting millet consumption. She described the collaboration as a meaningful step towards ensuring that millets become a regular part of every individual’s plate and diet, strengthening both agricultural sustainability and public nutrition.
Currently, HKMCF partners with various state government flagship programmes, including Indiramma Canteens and Bhojanamitra in Telangana. Through these initiatives, the foundation provides approximately 2.5 lakh meals every single day, making it one of the largest community food service organisations in the region. The inclusion of millet-based foods through this MoU is expected to significantly enhance the nutritional quality of these meals while supporting sustainable food systems across Telangana and beyond.
