Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, visited the ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research in Hyderabad to review the institute’s work on millet research and development.

During his visit, Dr. Jat interacted with scientists and staff members and examined several ongoing research programs. These programs focus on improving millet varieties, developing climate-resilient farming practices, strengthening seed production systems, and improving post-harvest processing and value addition. The discussions also highlighted the importance of promoting millets, often called “Shree Anna,” for better nutrition, sustainable agriculture, and improved income for farmers.

Dr. Jat also visited the Global Centre of Excellence on Millets at the institute. The centre aims to promote advanced research, training, and international collaboration in millet science and technology. It is expected to play an important role in sharing knowledge and innovations with farmers, researchers, and industry partners.

Appreciating the institute’s efforts, Dr. Jat encouraged researchers to further expand technologies related to millet cultivation and processing. He stressed the need to strengthen millet value chains by working closely with state governments, farmer groups, and other stakeholders so that millet-based products can reach more markets and benefit both farmers and consumers.
