A special three-day Millet Fest is set to take place at the District Panchayat office in Kakkanad from April 10 to 12, offering a wide selection of healthy grains and exciting discounts. This event brings together health lovers, organic farmers, and curious foodies under one roof to rediscover the power of millets.
Shoppers can explore and buy different millet varieties — like ragi, bajra, sorghum, foxtail, and more — with attractive discounts of up to 40%. Whether you're a long-time millet fan or new to these grains, this fest is a great chance to stock up and learn more.
The event is being jointly hosted by the District Panchayat and Organic Kerala Charitable Trust (OKCT) as part of their mission to bring healthier, more natural food choices to the public.
“Modern life has pushed us toward fast food and processed meals, which are a big reason behind rising health issues,” says M.M. Abbas, Vice-President of OKCT. “Kerala has seen a spike in lifestyle-related diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. We believe bringing back millets into our diet can make a real difference.”
Despite growing interest in millets, local farming in Kerala remains limited. Currently, only about 650 hectares in areas like Attapadi and Marayur are used for millet cultivation, mostly by tribal farmers.
“There’s huge untapped potential in districts like Ernakulam,” says M.J. Xavier, OKCT board member. “We’re giving away free seeds and full support to anyone interested in growing millets organically. We even buy the harvest from them if it’s grown the right way.”
The District Panchayat has been actively promoting millets since 2023, when they hosted their first Millet Fest during the International Year of Millets. This upcoming edition continues that effort to create a millet-friendly community.
“The exhibition will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” says Panchayat President Manoj Moothedan. Our team will be on hand to assist visitors, answer their questions, and provide helpful information.
So if you're looking to eat better, live healthier, or just try something new — the Millet Fest in Kakkanad is the place to be!
