Kezoma village in Kohima district will hold its first Ochu Millet Festival on August 30, 2025. The programme is being organised by the Kezoma Village Council with the support of the Agriculture and Tourism departments. Y. Vikheho Swu, President of the NDPP Agri & Allied Organisation and Managing Director of Okusa Toyota, will grace the occasion as the special guest.
The event will feature millet freshly harvested in July, along with organic vegetables and other local produce. It also pays tribute to the age-old Chünyi festival, once celebrated over two days with rituals, prayers for rain, and communal feasts. In earlier times, villagers from surrounding areas often invited Kezoma residents to conduct these ceremonies, believing their prayers would ensure good rainfall.
By reviving this tradition, the Ochu Millet Festival seeks to honour cultural practices while also raising awareness about millet as a nutritious and climate-resilient grain. The celebration will combine the spirit of harvest with the goal of passing on valuable traditions to younger generations.
