Jamshedpur Women’s University (JWU) and Manipal Tata Medical College held a one-day seminar titled “Nutrition for All,” focusing on the health benefits of millets. This event, part of the International Millets Year 2023, aimed to raise awareness about these nutritious grains during Nutrition Month. The seminar opened with remarks from Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Anjila Gupta, along with Professor Syed Ahmed, Professor Zarina Begum, Dr. Swati Shikha, and Dr. Sudhir Sahu.
Dr. Rama Subramaniam, Head of the Home Science Department, introduced the theme, stressing the need to educate communities about millets' nutritional benefits. Prof. Dr. Gupta highlighted the university’s commitment to national awareness programs, noting Millet's role in enhancing health and the economy. Professor Syed Ahmed emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and conducting research on millets.
During the plenary session, Professor Zarina Begum discussed the nutritional value of millets like ragi, jowar, bajra, and kutki, along with their historical significance. Dr. Swati Shikha encouraged participants to incorporate millets into their diets and discussed their integration into community nutrition programs.As part of National Nutrition Week, the seminar included competitions such as a millet recipe contest, a quiz, and an extempore speaking contest. Awards were given to winners, including Tina Tanti and Asifa Naaz in the Millet Recipe Competition, and Sweta in the Extempore contest.
The event concluded with award presentations, underscoring the importance of nutrition education. Dr. D. Pushpalatha led the session, while Sanchita Guha gave the vote of thanks. The seminar attracted numerous participants from NSS, NCC, and various departments, reinforcing its significance in promoting healthy eating habits.
