UP Government to Boost Farmer Income and Nutrition with Millet Cultivation Drive Across 47 Districts

In a major push toward sustainable agriculture and improved nutrition, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched a large-scale initiative to promote millet cultivation across 47 districts. This strategic move aims to enhance farmer incomes while simultaneously promoting healthier dietary habits among the population.

Under this program, the state will focus on increasing the production of nutrient-rich millets such as jowar, bajra, and ragi. These coarse grains are not only climate-resilient and water-efficient but are also packed with essential nutrients, making them a powerful ally in the fight against malnutrition.

The initiative is being implemented through the Department of Agriculture and aims to integrate millet-based crops into existing farming systems. Special efforts are being made to provide farmers with training, improved seeds, and financial support. The state also plans to collaborate with self-help groups and educational institutions to encourage millet consumption and increase awareness of their health benefits.

This millet mission aligns with the broader national campaign following the UN’s declaration of 2023 as the International Year of Millets, further solidifying India’s position as a global leader in millet production. With this focused effort, Uttar Pradesh hopes to not only secure better livelihoods for its farmers but also take a step toward a more nutritious and sustainable food system.
