To promote millet farming in the district, the Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation, with assistance from the state Agriculture Department, has opened three procurement centers for locally grown millet. These centers are strategically located, with one in Tissa and another in Salooni, both within the Churah subdivision, an area known for its extensive millet cultivation.
Kuldeep Dhiman, the Deputy Director of Agriculture in Chamba, explained that during this Kharif season, the department is specifically focusing on enhancing millet farming. This includes the cultivation of kodra (finger millet), kutki (little millet), and kauni (foxtail millet). As part of their initiative, the department has distributed around 25 quintals of seeds to farmers, offering an impressive 80 percent subsidy to encourage adoption and increase production.
Dhiman highlighted that the Kodra crop in the region is expected to be ready for harvest in just a few days, signaling a timely opportunity for farmers. To support these farmers and ensure they receive fair prices for their produce, the Himachal Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd has established two government procurement centers in Salooni and Tissa. This year, the government has set an approved purchase price of ₹4,290 per quintal for Kodra, which aims to provide farmers with a stable income and incentivize further cultivation of millets.
Overall, these efforts reflect a concerted push by the government to revitalize millet farming in the region, improve farmer livelihoods, and promote the consumption of these nutritious crops.
