The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is taking several steps to encourage the processing and marketing of millets in India. The government has approved financial support of about ₹793 crore under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLI) to promote companies that produce millet-based food products. A total of 29 companies, including large firms and small and medium enterprises, have received support under this scheme.
Millets are also being promoted through other government programmes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) and the PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme (PMFME). Under the PMFME scheme, millet products have been selected as the One District One Product (ODOP) in 21 districts. In addition, millet festivals have been organised in several districts to encourage small entrepreneurs and food processors to start millet-related businesses.
By December 2025, the government had approved more than 4,600 micro food processing units related to millet processing, with subsidies of over ₹91 crore. These initiatives aim to improve processing facilities, support small businesses, and increase the production of value-added millet products.
The government has reported strong growth in the millet sector. Sales of millet-based products under the PLI scheme increased significantly from ₹35 crore in 2020–21 to about ₹814 crore in 2024–25. The amount of millets purchased by participating companies also rose sharply during the same period.
