Millet farming and processing are growing in Kurnool and Nandyal districts with government support. Around 10 millet processing units operate in these areas, some receiving online orders. Officials have approved about 300 home-based micro units in Kurnool.
With rising health awareness, more people are consuming millets. To promote millet-based food, a Millet Café was opened at the Kurnool collectorate, serving nutritious meals like jowar rotis and laddus.
Under the PMFME Scheme, entrepreneurs can receive a 35% subsidy (up to ₹10 lakh) and loans up to ₹1 crore. India, the world’s largest millet producer, exports to countries like the UAE and the USA. Andhra Pradesh is encouraging millet farming, especially among tribal farmers.
Nandyal leads in millet-based product manufacturing. Farmer Ramasubba Reddy set up a processing unit supplying major cities and was recognized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. APMIP Project Director B. Uma Devi noted that several micro-processing units are thriving under central schemes.
