Millets Make a Comeback Telangana Urged to Rethink Crop Strategy

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dr. K. Laxman has urged the Telangana government to reduce its focus on paddy cultivation and instead promote the growth of millets. He pointed out that the continuous expansion of paddy farming is putting pressure on the state's water resources, especially groundwater. According to him, it is important for the government to think long-term and support crops that are more sustainable.

Speaking at a millet-focused event in Hyderabad, Dr. Laxman highlighted that millets require much less water compared to paddy and are also rich in nutrients. He said millets are not only good for health but also help protect the environment. With climate change becoming a bigger concern, he believes millets can play a major role in building a more eco-friendly food system.

Dr. Laxman also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making 2023 the International Year of Millets and encouraging farmers to return to traditional, native crops. He said Telangana has a good history of growing millets and the right climate to boost millet farming. This gives the state a great opportunity to become a leader in millet production across India.

He called on the Telangana government to provide proper support to farmers willing to grow millets. This includes setting fair prices, offering training, and making sure farmers have good markets to sell their produce. Dr. Laxman believes that by promoting millets, the state can protect its water, improve public health, and give farmers a better and more secure future.
