India, known for its deep-rooted agricultural heritage, leads the world in millet production—growing nearly 44% of the global supply across almost 10 million hectares. Yet, despite this dominance, millets have mostly remained a local favorite, with only a tiny fraction making it to global markets.
That, however, is changing fast.
In 2022–23, India's millet exports climbed to over USD 75 million—a nearly 20% jump from the previous year. What’s fueling this rise? A global wave of interest in nutritious, sustainable foods. Millets are naturally gluten-free, rich in fiber, and thrive in dry, tough climates, making them a perfect answer to modern dietary and environmental concerns.
The UN's announcement that 2023 would be the International Year of Millets provided more impetus and brought attention to these formerly disregarded grains. Countries across the world are now discovering the benefits of including millets in everyday meals and national food programs.
India is seizing this opportunity with bold steps. From showcasing millet products at global food fairs to joining hands with major retail chains abroad, the country is building new pathways for millet trade. Digital platforms are also helping Indian millet exporters connect directly with global buyers, opening doors to long-term partnerships.
With increasing health awareness and demand for climate-friendly crops, India is in a strong position to turn millets into a major export success. By blending traditional farming wisdom with modern global outreach, India is ready to take its humble millets from local farms to international plates.
In essence, millets are no longer just an ancient grain—they’re the future of smart eating, and India is leading the way.
