The "Promotion of Millets Production in India" event started today at the College of Agriculture, Lembucherra, Agartala. This event, organized by the North-Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC), a government agency, aims to raise awareness about the benefits of millets and encourage more production.
The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Arun Bhai Patel, Dean of the College of Fisheries, and officials from the State Agriculture Department. The event featured stalls selling millet products and attracted around 200 people, including farmers and entrepreneurs from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura.
Commodore Rajiv Ashok (Retd), Managing Director of NERAMAC, welcomed the guests and talked about the benefits of millet as an alternative to rice. He also mentioned that last year was declared the International Year of Millets by the Government of India.
Shri Anil S. Kotmire, General Manager of NABARD, stressed the importance of raising awareness about millet production. He urged farmers and entrepreneurs to learn about and promote millets to increase production.
Dr Debasish Sen, Principal of the College of Agriculture, Tripura, discussed how the college is helping farmers and working with NABARD on millet projects. He also suggested that processing units should match actual production levels and recommended exploring new methods of processing rather than setting up many large units.
Supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the event included sessions on millet cultivation, mechanization, and its uses, organized by the College of Agriculture, Tripura. A street play showed the benefits of growing millets, and various tools and machinery for millet farming were on display.
