The North-Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation (NERAMAC) recently held a two-day event called "Promotion of Millets Production in India" at the Meghalaya Rongali Bihu Auditorium in Shillong. The goal of the event was to raise awareness about the health benefits of millets and encourage local farmers to grow these nutritious grains.
B.K. Sohilya, Adviser and Chairman of the Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission, stressed the need for more awareness and teamwork to make millet farming successful. He noted that working together and spreading the word are essential for overcoming challenges and making the most of millet production.
Commodore Rajiv Ashok, Managing Director of NERAMAC, talked about the benefits of millets compared to traditional staples like rice. He praised the Indian government’s efforts to promote millets, pointing out that they are not only healthier but also better suited to different climate conditions, which makes them a good choice for farmers.
The event showcased a range of millet products, including raw grains, ready-to-cook meals, and ready-to-eat snacks. This gave attendees examples of how millets can be used in everyday diets and farming.
Around 200 people attended the event, including farmers, entrepreneurs, and experts from Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. The event provided a chance for networking and discussing the best ways to grow and market millets.
In summary, the event highlighted the potential of millets to improve food security and support sustainable farming in the region.
