Odisha’s Koraput District Breaks Record in Mandia Procurement

Koraput, Odisha – Koraput district has made a big achievement by buying more finger millet (mandia) from farmers than it has in the past seven years. As of April 7, 2025, the district bought 239,875 quintals of millet from 14,574 farmers—almost reaching its goal of 244,200 quintals for the year.

This success is thanks to the Odisha government’s Shree Anna Abhiyan program, which gave farmers an extra ₹2.10 per kg as a bonus. With this, farmers earned ₹45 per kg in total—₹42.90 as the government’s fixed price (MSP) and ₹2.10 as a special incentive. The money was sent directly to the farmers’ bank accounts.

The buying was organized by the district government, TDCCOL, Odisha Millet Mission, and many Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). Together, they ran buying centers in 14 blocks of the district.

Lamtaput block collected the most millet—41,000 quintals from 2,597 farmers. In Nandapur, the Shri Jaibik Farmers Producer Group bought 34,950 quintals from 2,382 farmers using six centers.

The millet will be used for state programs like giving mandia laddus (finger millet sweets) to school students and healthy millet foods to children and women under nutrition programs.

This record shows how teamwork and good support from the government can help farmers and promote healthy traditional crops.
