On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled 109 new crop varieties at the India Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. These varieties are specifically developed to be high-yielding, resilient to climate change, and rich in essential nutrients. The release included a diverse range of crops: 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops.
The field crops featured in this release included various cereals such as millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, and other promising varieties. These selections aim to improve agricultural productivity and offer more sustainable options for farmers. The horticultural crops included a wide array of fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, tubers, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants, each chosen for their potential to contribute to diverse agricultural needs.
During the event, PM Modi engaged with farmers and scientists, discussing the impact of these new varieties on agriculture. He emphasised that these crops could significantly reduce farming costs and positively impact the environment. The PMO statement noted that the new varieties are expected to enhance agricultural efficiency and sustainability.
In addition, the Prime Minister underscored the increasing trust in organic farming methods and the essential role of millets in promoting healthier and more sustainable agricultural practices.
