Parliament Canteen Introduces Health-Focused Menu

In a significant step towards promoting wellness, the Parliament canteen has launched a nutritious, health-conscious menu for lawmakers and staff. Initiated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the move blends traditional Indian flavors with modern nutritional needs, aiming to encourage better eating habits in the country’s highest legislative space.

The updated menu includes ragi millet idli, jowar upma, moong dal chilla, grilled fish, and grilled chicken with vegetables—all high in protein, fiber, and vital nutrients, while low in calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats. Each dish is accompanied by calorie counts to help individuals make informed dietary choices.

Millets, especially promoted during the International Year of Millets (2023), are a key feature, with options like mixed millet kheer (sugar-free) and barley-jowar salads. Vegetarian options include garden-fresh salads, basil shorba, and vegetable soups. Traditional items such as chana chaat are retained with healthier modifications.

Sugary beverages have been replaced by herbal teas, masala sattu, and jaggery-based mango panna, reflecting the broader emphasis on natural, wholesome nutrition.

The initiative aligns with national programs like Fit India Movement, Eat Right India, POSHAN Abhiyaan, and the NP-NCD programme, echoing Prime Minister Modi’s repeated calls for dietary awareness through Mann Ki Baat.

Additionally, Parliament has introduced regular health check-ups and diet-focused wellness sessions for MPs, reinforcing the focus on preventive healthcare.

This revamped menu is more than a dietary change—it symbolizes a growing cultural shift toward mindful, balanced living within India’s governance framework.
