In 2024, the demand for millet in Europe dropped sharply. People consumed only 518,000 tons, which is 24.9% less than the previous year. Because of this drop, the total market value also went down to $232 million, a decrease of 24.1% from 2023.
However, experts believe the market will slowly grow again in the coming years. By 2035, millet consumption in Europe is expected to reach 577,000 tons, with a small annual growth rate of 1.0%. In terms of value, the market may rise to $289 million, growing at a rate of 2.0% per year.
Russia is still the top millet consumer in Europe, using up about 56% of the total millet in 2024. Poland came next with 65,000 tons, and Ukraine followed with 18,000 tons. Interestingly, Poland’s millet consumption has steadily increased by 4.9% per year from 2013 to 2024.
Looking at trade, Europe’s millet imports slightly increased by 1.1%, reaching 125,000 tons in 2024. This is the first rise in imports since 2020. Exports also bounced back, going up by 24% to 260,000 tons—the first increase since 2021.
Overall, while the millet market in Europe faced a setback in 2024, there’s hope for recovery with slow but steady growth expected in both consumption and value.
