Resurgence of Millets Kupvi's Sustainable Agriculture Project under MGNREGA

In Kupvi, Shimla, authorities are actively promoting millet cultivation through MGNREGA. This initiative, championed by farmers like Pooja Devi and Ruma Devi, emphasizes the health benefits of millets and advocates sustainable agricultural practices. Playing a crucial role in this effort is Arvind Guleria, the Block Development Officer, and his office, which are instrumental in driving improvements in livelihoods and addressing climate challenges in the region.

Located in the Kupvi subdivision of Chopal Tehsil within Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, authorities are actively encouraging millet cultivation under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). This initiative underscores the nutritional advantages of millets over traditional cereals such as wheat, rice, and corn. Historically, Kupvi has been renowned for its diverse millet varieties, including finger millet, foxtail millet, barnyard millet, amaranth, and buckwheat. However, recent years have seen a decline in local interest in these nutritious grains, once staples of the region.

Pooja Devi, a 37-year-old resident of Bhaaloo Panchayat, serves as an inspiring example. With government support, she revitalized her land to cultivate millets, specifically cholai (spinach amaranth) and koda (foxtail millet), in collaboration with her mother-in-law, Kamla Devi. Pooja received 50,000 rupees for land development and ongoing assistance through MGNREGA, earning a daily wage of 240 rupees for her dedicated efforts. The government intends to market their harvest through newly established self-help groups in the village, thereby empowering local women.

Ruma Devi, an enthusiastic farmer from Kanda Bnah Gramme Panchayat, embarked on millet cultivation this year using free seeds provided for koda and spinach amaranthus. She planted her crops in April and is optimistic about a successful organic harvest. Spearheading this agricultural revitalization is Arvind Guleria, whose Block Development Office of Kupvi has played a pivotal role. Through close collaboration with local farmers and the agriculture department, Guleria's team has actively promoted millet cultivation under MGNREGA schemes. Their efforts have already engaged over 80 farmers, with plans to expand to nearly 300 by year-end and 500 by December 2026.

Under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, the Shimla district administration is committed to expanding the millet initiative to additional regions. Recognizing millets as 'nutri cereals,' this initiative aims to tackle climate challenges and improve public health. It seeks to promote sustainable farming practices, uplift farmers' livelihoods, and bolster food security in remote areas of Himachal Pradesh.
