Stakeholders Review Final Draft of NEDFi’s Millet Study

The final draft of a detailed study on millets conducted by the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) was recently reviewed during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the East Siang Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Arunachal Pradesh.

The study focuses on exploring how millet cultivation can contribute to long-term and sustainable economic development in the state. Prepared under NEDFi’s Techno Economic Development Fund (TEDF), the report examines opportunities in millet production, processing, value addition, and market expansion.

Researchers carried out field surveys across different districts to understand current production levels, regional crop patterns, and the challenges faced by farmers. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the millet ecosystem in Arunachal Pradesh, including traditional farming practices and indigenous food systems that are still followed in many tribal communities.

The study also identifies key issues affecting the sector, such as low crop productivity, poor access to quality seeds, lack of modern processing units, and limited technological support. It highlights gaps in the value chain, particularly in storage, processing, branding, and marketing of millet products.

During the review meeting, participants suggested strengthening local milling infrastructure in millet-growing areas and increasing awareness about the nutritional and health benefits of millets through agricultural extension programs.

The report recommends improving farming techniques, expanding processing facilities, encouraging women-led enterprises, and supporting farmer groups and cooperatives. With proper planning and investment, the millet sector has strong potential to generate income, create employment, and promote sustainable agriculture in Arunachal Pradesh.
