State Millet Mission Boosts Ragi Production in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has become the top state in India for ragi productivity due to the successful implementation of the Tamil Nadu Millet Mission, according to the State’s Agriculture Minister. The programme has helped strengthen millet cultivation and improve farm output across the state.

Launched in 2023–24 as a five-year initiative, the millet mission aims to increase both the production and consumption of millets. Through this programme, support has been provided to more than 12 lakh farmers, and millet cultivation has expanded to around 20 lakh acres of farmland.

As a result of these efforts, Tamil Nadu now ranks first in ragi productivity, second in overall ragi production, and fifth in the production of minor millets in the country. The area under pearl millet cultivation has also increased in recent years.

Officials said the mission is helping promote nutritious traditional grains while also improving farmers’ income and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices in the state.
