GK Patil Hall, a well-known wedding venue in the city, hosted a special event on Sunday. Instead of the usual DJ and orchestra, the couples organized talks on organic farming and the importance of millets.
The guests were interested and had discussions about natural food, the environment, and the challenges in agriculture. The wedding celebrated two couples, Amit and Shruti, and Amrut and Dakshayani. The grooms are the sons of Siddappa Bhusagond, a farmer and retired teacher from Tokota.
Dr. BC Sangappa, a scholar from the Indian Institute of Millet Research in Hyderabad, and Dr. Ravindra Belli, director at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad, gave talks about organic farming and the benefits of millets.
Dr. Onkar Kakade, head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Akkamahadevi Women’s University in Vijayapura, explained that the event was planned by the Bhusagond family. "Guests are usually free between 10 am and noon, so we organized the 'Siridhanya Kalyanotsav' seminar on millets and organic farming to raise awareness," he said.
Mallikarjun Hatti, a millet farmer who supplied millets for the wedding lunch, said many guests were excited to see millets on the menu. "The dishes were prepared by chefs who are skilled in cooking with millets," he added.
Bhusagond, who has won several awards including 'Krishi Pandit', said that topics like organic farming and millets shouldn’t just be discussed at seminars. "Millets were once the main food of the poor, but now they are forgotten. When we talked about having these seminars at the wedding with our relatives, everyone agreed right away," he said.
