The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has taken a major step toward healthier and more sustainable eating by significantly increasing the use of millets—also known as Shri Anna—in their daily meals. Millets now make up over 30% of the total food consumed in CISF mess facilities across the country. This achievement is part of a broader initiative led by the Indian government to promote the consumption of traditional grains that are rich in nutrients and environmentally friendly. Compared to rice and wheat, millets require less water, grow faster, and are naturally resistant to pests, making them ideal for sustainable agriculture.
To make this shift successful, CISF conducted several awareness programs, cooking demonstrations, and training sessions to help mess staff and personnel understand the health benefits of millets and how to cook them in delicious and practical ways. Popular dishes like millet khichdi, upma, dosa, and even desserts made from bajra and jowar are now being regularly served. The force's leadership has also actively supported this transition, recognizing its role in boosting physical fitness and long-term wellness among personnel. The CISF’s millet success story not only promotes better health within the force but also sets a positive example for other central and state agencies to follow in adopting millet-based meals.
