Training on Postharvest Value Addition in Millet
On August 19, 2024, a training and demonstration program on “Postharvest Value Addition in Millet” was held at the Pachey Samsing Gram Panchayat Kendra in Pakyong. This event was part of the CAU-CAEPHT M4Agri project, funded by the Digital India Corporation. The training was organized by ICAR-KVK, East Sikkim, and the Pakyong Agriculture Department, drawing 61 local farmers and members of Self-Help Groups.
The program aimed to encourage women to start agricultural businesses by adding value to their products. Mrs. Rebecca Gurung from the Pakyong Agriculture Department opened the event, emphasising the benefits of postharvest processing. Dr. Abujam Anuradha Devi from M4Agri outlined the training’s goals and shared a toll-free support number.
Speakers included Mrs. Menuka Rai, who discussed branding local organic products, and Dr. Angam Raleng, who covered the benefits of millets and their value-added products. Mrs. Binita Chettri reviewed local agricultural activities and encouraged practical application of the training. Mrs. Anushree Gogoi provided hands-on training in food sanitation, packaging, and millet-based baking.
Mr. H.B. Gurung, Panchayat President, praised the program and encouraged participants to market their millet products widely. The event concluded with a thank you to all attendees and hopes for Pachey Samsing to become a model village for millet products in Sikkim.
