Farmers Encouraged to Adopt Climate-Resilient Minor Millets

Agriculture experts in Himachal Pradesh are promoting the cultivation of minor millets as a sustainable alternative for farmers, especially in hilly regions. Through training sessions and awareness programmes, farmers are being encouraged to adopt these traditional crops along with natural farming practices.

The initiative focuses on equipping farmers with practical skills such as organic soil management, preparation of natural fertilisers, and eco-friendly pest control methods. These efforts are particularly aimed at supporting small and marginal farmers by reducing input costs while improving crop resilience.

Experts pointed out that minor millets—including finger millet, foxtail millet, barnyard millet, and proso millet—are well suited to the region’s terrain and climate. They require minimal water, grow well under challenging conditions, and offer strong nutritional value.

In addition to improving farm sustainability, millet cultivation is seen as a way to enhance soil health, preserve biodiversity, and provide better income opportunities. The push reflects a broader effort to revive traditional crops while aligning agriculture with environmental and nutritional priorities.
